Fun With Comprehension Strategies

Questioning
This week we have been learning about questioning. Students are being introduced to Wyatt the Wondering Wolf this week to help them ask meaningful questions before, during and after reading. This strategy builds upon students’ natural impulse for curiosity. They are learning that asking questions increases
understanding.
*Ask your student about using a questioning rock with his/her teacher! Ask him/her to tell you about asking questions like Wyatt.

Fun With Comprehension Strategies

Every student in Kindergarten through 5 th grade is being introduced to common comprehension strategies this year! Over the past few weeks everyone has been learning
about Metacognition, Schema and Inferring. Reading is so cool! Here is some background information for parents…
Metacognition
Metacognition is “thinking about your thinking.” Students made “real reading salad,” where they experienced the difference between just reading the words (fake reading) and reading the words while thinking about the meaning (real reading).
*Ask your student to tell you about making real reading salad with the class.

Schema

Activating your schema while reading is necessary to understand. Schema is all about making connections. You use your schema by connecting your background knowledge, or information you already know, to new information you are reading. Students were introduced to our first comprehension character, Spinny the Spider! Spinny is used during instruction to help students make connections.
*Ask your student to tell you about making connections while reading. Ask about the schema roller!

Inferring

Inferring is merging your schema with an evidence-based guess. Franny the Frog is our second comprehension character who helps students make inferences. Franny focuses on finding text evidence while reading. Franny and Spinny are really good friends because they always have to work together to make an inference. Franny’s text evidence plus Spinny’s schema makes a solid inference.
                          *Ask your student if he/she made an inference during the teacher’s read aloud. Ask him/her about using a shoe in class to practice inferring.
