PLAYWORKS in Canyons School District

Play as a Force for Learning

Playworks Utah, a non-profit that uses the power of play to cultivate safe, healthy learning environments, received a $10,000 grant from Larry Miller Charities last week—and chose to publicly celebrate the occasion at Midvale Elementary. As the only school district in Utah to deploy Playworks programming at all of our elementary schools, CSD stands to benefit most from the gift. Playworks uses play to teach kids the social and behavioral skills. Something as simple as a game of four-square can help students learn to follow rules, set goals, learn from failure, manage tough emotions, and resolve conflict. And an impromptu game of ro-sham-bo, or rock-paper-scissors, can stop a playground argument from escalating to the point of requiring a teacher or the principal to intervene, says Midvale's Chip Watts, who credits Playworks’ influence for an 80 percent drop in office referrals at his school from 2014 to 2016. Freeing teachers from having to manage social and behavioral issues allows them to spend more of their precious classroom time on academics, he said. Playworks also builds leadership skills by recruiting fourth and fifth grade students to serve as “junior coaches” who promote fair play during recess and strive to ensure that everyone feels included.

Telling the Canyons District Story

Because parents are busy, CSD strives to make it as easy as possible to find information about Canyons District — and stay up to date on the latest news. We use most available platforms, both traditional and non-traditional, to tell the Canyons District story. With the start of school, traffic to our website is again picking up; last month we logged more than 88,000 unique page views. In the two months since the July 1 start of the fiscal year, Canyons District has appeared in the news 58 times—almost exclusively positive coverage. Over that same time, we’ve posted more than 90 pieces of content to our Facebook page, and shared double that number of Tweets. Both our Twitter and Facebook audiences continue to grow as does public engagement in the form of “shares,” “retweets” and “link clicks.” In fact, our click-through rate on Twitter— the percentage of followers who click on the links that we share—is nearly six times higher than the industry standard. But we’re not stopping there. To drive more eyeballs to our website, we’ll be heavily promoting our RSS feeds, which send information directly to subscribers as it’s published. We’ve launched a new “Question of the Month” web feature where we highlight answers to frequently asked questions. And we’re recruiting PTA members to serve as “brand ambassadors” by sharing pre-written Tweets and stories on their social media feeds. Next time you’re on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube or Flickr, add Canyons District and join the conversation. #wearecanyons #csdistheplacetobe

Meet Our New 5th Grade Teacher

Posted in News & Announcements

Hi Edgemont! My name is Riley Nemrow and I’m from Boise, Idaho. I received my Bachelor’s in Elementary Education from BYU-Hawaii on the island of Oahu. After graduation, I went to Ogden Utah were I taught 2ndgrade. I’m so excited to be teaching 5th grade this year at Edgemont.

My husband and I love vacationing and visiting art galleries and small towns. I love spending time with him and our puppy Ollie. I enjoy reading, art, photography, being outside, and acting silly.

I’m looking forward to my new teaching adventure at Edgemont Elementary and meeting my students!
